Boys Varsity Baseball vs. Coe-Brown Northwood Academy

Game Date
Jun 4, 2016
Score
GRIZZLIES: 6
COE-BROWN NORTHWOOD ACADEMY: 3

In a game where both teams had numerous chances to score, Goffstown pulled through with timely hits.

Kyle Perron drove in two runs and Nate Proulx threw a two-hitter to lead the third-ranked Grizzlies to a 6-3 triumph over sixth-ranked Coe-Brown of Northwood in a NHIAA Division II quarterfinal baseball contest Saturday at Lyons Field.

Goffstown advances to the semifinals for the fourth straight season under fourth-year head coach Adam Lawrence, facing Bill Dod's second-seeded Souhegan of Amherst squad on Thursday at 4 p.m. at Southern New Hampshire University.

Lawrence was pleased about the win, but disappointed with his defense which committed five errors against the Bears.

"I don't care who we play next, if we commit errors Thursday like we did today, our season will be over," said Lawrence. "We were fortunate today because five errors usually lead to losses, not wins."

Proulx also allowed five walks, but to his credit, he managed to get the outs when he needed them the most.

"We didn't get many key hits and they did, that's really the story today," said Coe-Brown head coach Sean Ashley. "We got runners in scoring position, but just couldn't get enough of them to home plate."

Coe-Brown got its lead-off hitter on base four times overall including the first three innings when they managed just one run. Proulx got out of a first and second no-out jam in the first inning and allowed a second inning run on an infield throwing error.

In the third inning Andrew Therrien of Coe-Brown opened the inning by reaching on an error, but Proulx got Noah Dubois to bounce into a 5-4-3 double play. It turned out to be a big play because the next hitter, Jay Cleveland, drilled a double to the fence that could have given the Bears a 3-0 lead.

Instead, Goffstown took a 4-1 lead in the home third, capitalizing on two walks from starter Taylor Dow , two fielding errors and RBI hits from Perron, Cody Morel and Peter Steckowych, who along with Perron and Tyler Small, had two hits. Steckowych scored the fourth run of the inning on an infield error.

Dow allowed nine hits over 5-1/3-innings, allowing five walks with two strikeouts. Despite the shaky fielding, Proulx allowed just three batters to reach over the next three innings through the sixth frame.

In the fifth, Therrien reached on an infield hit before Cleveland walked with two outs. But Proulx bore down and whiffed Jacob Rich, stranding the sixth and seventh runners for Coe-Brown.

"My curveball was working today and that was the pitch that helped me out the most," said Proulx. "I threw many pitches but I wanted to finish."

Small and Perron, who each drove in a run in the sixth inning, provided Proulx with a 6-1 cushion. But two Goffstown errors on the same play in the seventh eventually allowed Coe-Brown to score twice. Again Proulx slammed the door, getting two of his four strikeouts in the inning to close it out.

"Nate battled and got the tough outs and. on offense. we got the hits with guys on base to get and build the lead," said Lawrence. "But I told our team after the game, we got a lot of work ahead of us. We need to play much better on Thursday."
