NHIAA Baseball: Goffstown, Putnam throttle Milford

MILFORD — Goffstown scored eight runs in the first two innings, and pitcher Tanner Putnam flirted with a no-hitter before settling for a one-hitter as the Grizzlies cruised to an 8-0 shutout over Milford Thursday in the Division II regular-season finale for both teams.

At 15-3, Goffstown has locked up the second seed in the upcoming NHIAA tournament. The Grizzlies are eager to defend their title.

“I think we were inconsistent early (in the season), but our defense picked up,” said Grizzlies coach Adam Lawrence. “The offense has been so-so, but if we aren’t giving up runs, we can win the close games.”

The Spartans (6-10) lost their last three games and currently hold the No. 13 position. The top 16 teams make the playoffs.

Putnam’s one mistake was a clean single to center by Mark Madigan leading off the sixth inning. He fanned 10, walked one and hit two batters.

“He threw very well. Lots of strikes. Also threw the slider a lot, which is good come playoff time,” said Lawrence. “With Nate Proulx and Kyle Perron throwing strikes, as long as we can play defense, I think we’ll do alright (in the playoffs.)”

The Grizzlies scored all they needed with three runs in the first inning off Milford starter Bryce Walker. Putnam doubled and scored on a groundout, and Nate Proulx slugged a two-run double.

Goffstown added five in the second off reliever Tyler Gendron.

Highlights were a run-scoring double by Mike Bailey, an RBI triple by Connor Easton and RBI singles by Perron, Jason Thomas and Dylan Skinner.
